The best way out of a slump is to define a life goal. Once done, you will identify your priorities and the areas of your life that needs improvement. Thereafter, you’ll be able to start along a path of self-discovery and fulfillment. Goal setting may pertain to health, spirituality, finances, relationships, work, hobbies or personality changes. The first step toward achieving your dreams is deciding what areas are most important. It can be difficult if you try to start on everything all at once. You’re more likely to succeed if you choose one priority goal at a time.

The first step to establishing a life goal is to do a little life planning. You might want to write down the basic categories of life, such as health, relationships/family, career, hobbies, finances and behavioral/personality traits. Then you can write down three sentences for each, stating where you have been, where you are now and where you’d like to be. So, for example, under your work goals, you might write… “Where I’ve been: I worked as a secretary at a law office. Where I am now: I am finishing my last year of law school. Where I’d like to be: I want to be an attorney at a law office firm.” You can feel good about where you’ve come from, but you can also brainstorm five short term goals that can help you reach the long term goal of becoming a practicing attorney. You might then list finishing school, taking bar exam study classes, passing the bar exam, interning at a law firm and updating resume.

Once you have everything written down, one predominant life goal will likely emerge. Have you put career first and let your health languish? Or have you been so preoccupied with your relationship that you lost sight of your career goal of running your own business? Look at some of your long term goals and list the short term goals you must accomplish to get there. Then determine an appropriate timeline in which to meet your objectives. For instance, your long term goal might be to run a five-minute mile. First, you must set up a training schedule of 5 days/week. Then, you must try to run a mile without stopping. Then you can try to shave off a minute here and there to reduce your time from 10 minutes down to five. You can try training with weights to feel lighter or change your diet slightly to include more protein and energy-boosting foods. Whatever your plan of attack may be, looking at manageable, written goals will help you accomplish them.

After you determine your life goal, the challenging part will be to stay motivated. Often, individuals lose their way and forget why the goals they set out to achieve meant so much to them. It’s recommended that you tell as many people as you can about your goal, so you will feel the social pressure to succeed. With fitness aspirations, it’s especially helpful to have a workout buddy to keep you trying your best. You may also want to surround yourself with like-minded people who are also working toward the same dream. It’s already established that giving excuses attempts to divert the attention from you (the individual) and tries to explain several reasons for not accomplishing or carrying out various tasks. It also puts up a wall of defence for exhibiting particular behaviors such as failing to keep promises, quitting certain habits etc.

Develop a high level of self confidence in yourself, what you do and what you are good at. I have always emphasized focusing on your strengths and working on your limitations. Making excuses won’t get you anywhere; rather it will just increase your feelings of insecurity.

There are numerous opportunities to shine, improve yourself, grow physically mentally, morally but you won’t know this if you keep making excuses.

Being successful in anything doesnt come easy and its definitely not cheap. So cherish your successes, let them be a source of encouragement but at the same time look at your flaws. Work on it; be willing to learn from them.

Know what you can do or can’t do. Discover your limits.

Develop a high level of optimism

Be responsible, own up to your faults, successes, failures etc.

Create ideas. Don’t just sit there and make excuses, think hard and think well!!!

I have discovered that because we are overwhelmed by our fears, worries and inadequacies we do not to listen carefully to whats being said to us and quickly come up with all sorts of excuses.

Don’t be defensive: Avoid being defensive because your response to certain issues may be blunt and out of order. Gain control of your emotions and exercise a bit of patience. If youre going to stop making excuses, you have to learn to stop being defensive.

Go Forward: Whatever you do, wherever you are, in whatever situations you find yourself go forward!!!

One of the common denominators of successful people is their ability to persevere when things don’t go as planned. Effective people don’t allow themselves to get bogged down in feelings that don’t serve their purpose.

On the other hand, ineffective, unsuccessful people allow their emotions to rule rather than their rational and objective nature. They lament what happened or what didn’t and become victims rather than masters of their circumstances.

We all have disappointments. We all suffer setbacks. If we’re going to attempt anything worthwhile, we’re going to experience failure. The mature-and ultimately successful-person sees failure as part of success. When one method fails, they try again with a new one. Sometimes it takes many attempts.

In my coaching/consulting work, I see all too often the tendency to fix blame instead of fix problems. Rather than looking at challenges rationally and objectively, emotions are allowed to dictate the process.

They’re unable to make corrections without invalidation. Something goes wrong and they want to blame. Profit isn’t reached fast enough and someone needs to be fired. There’s never a shortage of people or things on which to blame the failure.

I suggest a different approach. It’s a process I call, “What Worked, What Didn’t, What’s Next?”

This practice works whether you’re dealing with a business, a relationship, a project or your life. The key is to evaluate often, objectively and then to move on.

And the more often and impartially you measure and evaluate, the better it works. It’s just feedback-and feedback is neither positive nor negative. It’s simply information. I call feedback the “Breakfast of Champions.” Looking at what happened with a healthy degree of detachment allows us to make better decisions.

What Worked?

What actions moved us toward our objective? What’s worth repeating? What felt good? What created excellence?

Acknowledge your successes. Celebrate! Praise your own as well as the efforts of others.

When you focus on what worked, you begin with positive energy. And you create momentum toward solutions.

What Didn’t?

OK, where did we screw up? What created the mistake? Not who dropped the ball, but when, where and how did we drop it? How can we avoid it next time?

It’s rarely people who mess up but rather systems that don’t adequately support them. Most people mean well and try their best. The focus should be on how to better support one another to reduce errors and increase quality.

There are many ways to accomplish what you desire. Often, in finding new ways, we create things we never would have if the first or second effort had succeeded.

Acknowledge the mistakes, make new plans and devise new strategies.

What’s Next?

Regardless of how well or how badly things went, it’s history. Nothing is going to change the past. Being upset about it, feeling guilty, placing blame or even resting too long on our laurels will cause us to lose headway.

One might be wise to use the U.S. Marine Corps acronym, FIDO-Forget It, Drive On. But I would add one more piece: learn from the experience.

After you analyze what happened, the question should be, “What’s next?” This takes the focus off from what’s happened and places it on where we’re going and what needs doing.

You can quickly go through this process alone or with a group. It can take a few moments or several hours, depending on the complexity of the project.

The key is to do it with impartiality and objectivity. Mistakes, corrections and new attempts are merely part of successful ventures. They don’t mean anything; they’re simply opportunities to create excellence.
